Driving Test Booking Changes in 2026: What Learners in Scotland Need to Know
If you are preparing for your practical driving test in Scotland, there are important changes to the way car driving tests are booked and managed in 2026.
Understanding the current rules can help you avoid unnecessary changes to your booking and, more importantly, make sure you are properly prepared before choosing your test date.
What Has Changed?
From 12 May 2026, learners must book, change, swap or cancel their own car driving test. A driving instructor or another person cannot manage the booking on the learner’s behalf.
There is also a limit of two changes to an existing driving test booking. From 9 June 2026, learners can only move their test to one of the three nearest test centres to their existing booking.
These rules apply to car driving tests in Scotland, as well as England and Wales.
Why Your Test Date Matters
Choosing a test date should not simply be about finding the earliest available appointment. You need to consider whether your driving skills are ready for the standard expected on test day.
Before booking, it is worth discussing your progress with your driving instructor and considering areas where you may need more practice.
Are You Ready to Take Your Test?
There is no fixed number of lessons that every learner must complete before taking the practical test. Readiness depends on your ability to drive safely and independently in different road and traffic conditions.
- Can you drive without regular instructor prompts?
- Can you manage different traffic situations?
- Can you handle unfamiliar roads?
- Can you complete your driving safely and independently?
- Are you comfortable with the skills required during your test?
If you are still relying heavily on prompts or need more practice in particular situations, additional lessons may be worthwhile before booking your test.
