Practising Driving Between Lessons | Scotland
Want to practise between driving lessons? Learn what learner drivers should consider before practising with a supervising driver.
Making the Most of Your Driving Lessons
Professional driving lessons help you develop essential driving skills, but some learner drivers also want to practise between lessons. Additional mock may help you become more familiar with driving tasks and build experience in different situations.
However, practising outside professional lessons requires careful planning. Before taking a learner vehicle onto the road, make sure you understand the rules and have the appropriate supervision and insurance arrangements.
Check the Rules Before Practising
Learner drivers must meet the legal requirements for driving on public roads. This includes holding the appropriate provisional licence, being supervised by someone who meets the legal requirements and having suitable insurance.
The vehicle must also meet the applicable requirements for a learner vehicle, including displaying L plates correctly where required.
If you are uncertain about who can supervise you or what insurance is needed, check the current official guidance before practising.
Choose a Suitable Mock Goal
Rather than trying to practise everything at once, focus on a skill you have already discussed with your instructor.
- Becoming more familiar with the vehicle’s controls.
- Practising a manoeuvre that your instructor has explained.
- Developing smoother starts and stops where appropriate.
- Improving your awareness of road signs and markings.
- Building experience with junctions when you are ready.
Choose mock that matches your current ability. Do not attempt unfamiliar or challenging situations simply because you want to progress quickly.
Keep Communication Clear
Before starting, agree on the purpose of the practice session with your supervising driver. Make sure both of you understand the route, the skills being practised and when to stop if the situation becomes uncomfortable or unsafe.
If you encounter a problem or receive conflicting advice, make a note of it and discuss it with your professional instructor during your next lesson.
How Professional Lessons Can Help
Private mock and professional instruction have different roles. Your instructor can assess your progress, explain areas that need attention and help you develop a structured approach to learning.
STUART’S Driving School provides manual and automatic driving lessons across Central Scotland. You can discuss your current experience and ask which skills would be appropriate to work on during your next lesson.
Keep Your Practice Safe and Productive
Additional practice should support your learning, not replace professional guidance or encourage you to drive beyond your ability. Always follow the legal requirements for learner drivers and choose suitable conditions for your level of experience.
